New year, new offer – a simpler way to get active in North Lincolnshire

Comments Off on New year, new offer – a simpler way to get active in North Lincolnshire

The new year is bringing a new, simpler leisure offer for every resident across North Lincolnshire – making it easier than ever to get fit, get moving and feel healthier.

Local gyms and swimming pools are now simpler to use, with clearer options, better access and a more straightforward way to get active – whatever your starting point and whatever your goals.

Cllr Rob Waltham, leader, North Lincolnshire Council, said: “The new year is when many people think about getting more active, but too often it feels complicated or intimidating.

“This new offer is about cutting through that – clearer choices, easier access and great local facilities that people can simply get on and use.”

The refreshed offer follows investment in leisure centres across the area, with upgraded gyms, improved pools and better activity spaces now matched by a simpler, more modern way to use them.

New membership options – Unlimited, Core, Surge, Boost, Ignite and Collective – strip away complexity, offering a clear, flexible and modern way to get active that fits around real life.

And, they give residents access across the whole area – all gyms and all swimming pools in Brigg, Barton, Crowle, Epworth, Scunthorpe and Winterton – with no groups, no tiers and no complicated rules.

Cllr Carl Sherwood, cabinet member for safer, stronger communities, said: “You don’t need to be a gym expert to get active.

“Whether it’s getting back into fitness, swimming more often or simply moving a bit more in the new year, this new leisure offer makes it easier to start – and easier to stick with it.

“It’s about opening the door to activity for everyone.”

New Junior Gym programme launching in the New Year

Comments Off on New Junior Gym programme launching in the New Year

A new, structured Junior Gym programme is launching this January to help young people aged 11 to 16 get active, build confidence and learn how to use gym equipment safely – setting them up with healthy habits for life.

Designed especially for beginners, the programme gives young people the skills, knowledge and confidence they need to feel comfortable in a gym environment, with expert guidance every step of the way.

A supported four-week introduction to the gym

All new Junior Gym attendees will complete a four-week induction programme led by qualified fitness instructors. Each session focuses on a different element of fitness, helping young people progress safely and at their own pace:

  • Week 3: Introduction to functional training
  • Week 4: A personalised gym programme tailored to the individual

The induction costs £30 for four sessions and must be completed before attending regular Junior Gym sessions.

What happens next?

After completing the induction, juniors can attend ongoing Junior Gym sessions for £5 per session. These sessions are supervised by qualified fitness staff, giving young people the freedom to work towards their own goals in a safe, supportive environment. Supporting healthier, more active young people

More than half of young people are not achieving the recommended 60 minutes of daily physical activity. Programmes like Junior Gym play an important role in tackling this by offering structured, welcoming and age-appropriate ways for teenagers to get active, build confidence and enjoy moving more.

The Junior Gym programme forms part of a wider commitment to improving young people’s health and wellbeing, alongside initiatives such as free holiday swimming and expanded opportunities for young people to be active across local leisure facilities.

Barrow villagers set to stitch their history into a lasting legacy

Comments Off on Barrow villagers set to stitch their history into a lasting legacy

Residents of Barrow-upon-Humber are set to tell their story in a truly unusual way – a hand-stitched tapestry capturing the village’s history from the Domesday Book right up to the present day.

The tapestry will be a celebration of the people, places and moments that have shaped Barrow over the centuries, brought to life by local volunteers with a love of art, heritage and community spirit.

The creative project, led by Barrow Parish Council, has been awarded £5,014 from North Lincolnshire Council’s Cultural Futures fund.

Cllr Rob Waltham, leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said: “This is such a wonderful idea – a creative way to celebrate Barrow’s history while bringing people together to learn new skills and share stories.

“Every stitch will tell a piece of the village’s story and it’s great to see residents taking the lead in creating something so special and lasting.

“These things are important to people across North Lincs and will encourage communities to thrive.”

The Barrow tapestry is one of nine projects across North Lincolnshire to receive support from the Cultural Futures fund.

From murals in Winterton to puppet-making in Scunthorpe – and even a feature-length film celebrating Scunthorpe United’s 125-year history – communities are coming together to tell their stories in new and inspiring ways.

Cllr John Davison, cabinet member for safer, stronger communities (urban), said: “The programme is about creativity, connection and pride. It gives people the chance to get hands-on, celebrate where they live, and make something that will be treasured for years to come. Barrow’s tapestry is a perfect example of that.”

In total, more than £65,000 has been awarded in this round, with another funding round to follow as part of the Cultural Futures programme, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

The grant is part of the council’s ongoing support for grassroots groups that enrich local communities and encourage people to get active, connect and take part.

Since launching in 2011, the Community Grant fund has supported hundreds of projects across North Lincolnshire – investing in the spaces, activities and facilities that residents say make the biggest difference.

Grants are available for junior and youth groups, charitable bodies, co-operatives, not-for-profit organisations, and individuals demonstrating excellence in sport, art, or culture. Support is also available for venue hire, helping to keep community spaces open and active.

Make the most of your air fryer – save on bills and eat healthy

Comments Off on Make the most of your air fryer – save on bills and eat healthy

Residents across North Lincolnshire are discovering new ways to cook smarter, save energy and cut costs thanks to a series of free community sessions from North Lincolnshire Council.

The demonstrations – open to anyone who has received a free air fryer through the council’s energy-saving initiative – will showcase how this modern kitchen gadget can help create quick, healthy, and affordable meals while using less power.

Cllr Rob Waltham, leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said: “People are already finding that small changes in how we use modern technology can make a big difference. These sessions are about sharing ideas, inspiring confidence, and helping everyone make the most of the tools that can save energy and money day to day.”

The sessions, taking place in hubs across the region, will share practical tips on how to prepare quick, healthy, and affordable meals, all while saving energy and reducing electricity bills.

It is part of a wider programme helping residents stay active, healthy, and supported, particularly during the colder months.,

Older residents will receive extra fuel payments, free winter warm packs, and low-energy appliances to cut bills and stay safe at home. They’ll also have the chance to build digital skills, which will boost confidence, tackle isolation and help people stay connected.

Cllr Tim Mitchell, cabinet member for sustainability and transformation, said: “Air fryers use much less energy than conventional ovens and are a fantastic way to prepare tasty, healthy meals quickly. By giving residents the tools and know-how to use them confidently, we’re helping households live more sustainably while cutting costs.”

Each session lasts around 45 minutes, with time slots available starting 10am, 11am, 1pm, 2pm, and 3pm at the following locations:

  • Monday 27 October – Scunthorpe Central
  • Monday 27 October – Barton Assembly Rooms
  • Tuesday 28 October – Ashby Community Hub
  • Tuesday 28 October – Winterton Hub
  • Wednesday 29 October – Brigg Hub
  • Wednesday 29 October – Haxey Memorial Hall

Places on all sessions must be booked in advance. To reserve a space, email community.recreation@northlincs.gov.uk or call 01724 297270.

An online instruction video is also available at www.northlincs.gov.uk/airfryers. Those without access to the internet can use computers and wi-fi free of charge at any North Lincolnshire library.

The sessions are part of North Lincolnshire Council’s Household Support Fund programme, which is funded by the UK Government.
